Sir Tommy Macpherson Shinty Trophy

Angus Macpherson, Badenoch, Scotland

1. What is your object and how did it come to be in your possession?
The object that I have chosen is a thank you presented to my father Sir Tommy Macpherson for his hard work in supporting the Commando Association. It is a silver replica of the Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge. It has now become the Sir Tommy Macpherson Memorial Trophy which is competed for annually at the time of the Clan Gathering between the two great shinty rivals Newtonmore and Kingussie.

2. Why have you chosen this object for the Macphersoniana project?
It is unique and it represents so many aspects of Badenoch. Not only my father, a product of Badenoch, but also shinty, a game with so much Macpherson involvement both at its foundation and in the current game.

3. Why is this object important to you and what does it mean to you?
It represents many parts of my father’s varied life. Not only his war, where joining the Scottish Commando initiated his first experience of combat and his first MC, but also his long life dedicated to service represented by this gift from the Commando Association. And, of course, his life long interest in shinty!

4. What does this object tell us about what it means to be a Macpherson?
To me it represents some of the many aspects of what makes a Macpherson: Dedication, Loyalty, Service, Ability, Fitness, Team work and a passion for Badenoch to name but a few!
